Should gambling be legalized? |

Should gambling be legalized? Authorities are deeply concerned about the negative impact that gambling has on a person. With the overwhelming stories of casinos being responsible for financially ruining an individual, officials in some countries are in a dilemma as to whether they should legalize gambling or not. Irrational and compulsive players have never been in control of the money they spend when placing casino bets. They get drained off their finances and become bankrupt. It does not matter how many times their defeated because their only concern is that the next bet could be the one that helps them become a winner. Digging into their life savings, mortgaging their house, using their children’s college fund, borrowing from friends and family are just some of the ways they get the money to sustain their gambling. When they hit rock bottom, some will even go to the extent of committing suicide.
Legalized gambling can only be found in some countries like South Africa, the United Kingdom, Spain, Singapore, Ireland and Italy. The United States has strict restrictions when it comes to the gambling game whether it involves online and offline casinos or sports betting and horse betting. This is mainly because many people have fallen prey to gambling which has resulted in an increase in crime, suicide, etc. People are also forbidden in making any payments online through any of the online e-commerce businesses that offers money transactions to take place between an individual and a casino. Neteller was one such business that offered this service but was banned in the U.S. in 2007 for money laundering. One reason for countries to have legalized gambling is because they feel that it is the best way to monitor and regulate what is happening in the gambling world. It also allows players to be at ease when placing casino bets since gambling is legal and they no longer had to fear about being caught for breaking the law. The legalization of gambling will always be a controversial issue. People in favor of it have argued that the tax revenues earned by casinos and other forms of gambling can be invested back into the community and many people will be benefited from it. Others feel that by legalizing gambling, it will result in more people losing control and becoming addicted.
The important thing to remember for any player is although it is safer to gamble where its legal, without self control a gambler will be ruined financially as well as psychologically. Without self control, the legalization of gambling would not benefit the player. It would only benefit the government who would earn millions in revenues and also those who are employed by the gambling institutions. |
